No Condemnation: Life in the Spirit

Paul's great crescendo — from the verdict of "no condemnation" to the promise that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

The Verdict Has Been Read

Romans 8 does not begin with a command. It begins with a courtroom announcement.

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." — Romans 8:1

Notice the word therefore. Paul has spent seven chapters building the case: all have sinned, all are justified freely by grace, all who are united to Christ have died to sin. Now the gavel falls.

The Context: A Man Who Cried "Wretched"

Chapter 7 ends with a cry: "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" Romans 8 is the answer. The struggle is real, but the struggle is not the verdict.

The Spirit Who Indwells

"You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you." — Romans 8:9

The Christian life is not self-improvement with religious vocabulary. It is a new life, animated by a new Person. The Spirit bears witness that we are children, and children are heirs.

Groaning With Hope

Paul does not pretend creation is fine. It groans. We groan. Even the Spirit groans in intercession. But this groaning is the groaning of labour, not of death.

Application

  1. When accused, answer with the verdict. Your conscience may speak, but God has spoken last.
  2. Pray in weakness. The Spirit helps when you do not know what to say.
  3. Read suffering through verse 28. Not every thing is good, but God works all things for good.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." — Romans 8:38–39

How do I reconcile Romans 8:28 with the real suffering I'm walking through right now?

Pastor's answer

Grace, verse 28 doesn't say all things are good — it says God works all things together for good. Your grief is real, and verse 26 says the Spirit groans with you. You're not alone in it.
